What can I expect if my house is infested?
In order to keep your house free of moths, termites, ants and other pests, you must take care of it, because your home insurance isn't going to pay for the repair bills caused by these pests. It is important to remember that a standard home insurance policy won't cover pest-related damage. However, there are certain exclusions for damage caused by vermin, insects, rodents, or animals owned or kept by the policyholder.
Insurance companies believe that infestations are known as home-maintenance issues. They believe that it is the homeowner's responsibility to take care of the house and prevent damage after an annual termite inspection and treatment.
Here are some great pest-prevention tips from the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):
-
Get rid of fallen fruit and diseased plants that might welcome pests.
-
Keep in mind that pet droppings attract flies that can spread bacteria. Try to remove them as often as possible.
-
Sweep away standing puddles of water, which might indicate homes for pests like mosquitoes.
-
Try to keep trees, shrubs, wood and vegetation at least 18 inches away from your home. Tree branches that touch your home should be removed, as well.
-
To avoid attracting termites and carpenter ants, remove piles of wood from under or around your home.
-
Do not accumulate garbage or litter because it draws rats, mice and other rodents.
-
Fix leaky plumbing and avoid water accumulating in or around your home.
-
Food scraps should be stored in animal-proof garbage cans along with trash.
-
Try to keep your kitchen as clean as possible and free from oil and cooking grease.
-
Food should not be left in pet bowls on the counter or floor for a long period of time.
-
Plastic containers or sealed glass should store your food
