Health Insurance Plans for College Students

There are three types of college students: those who get health insurance from their parents, those who pay for their own, and those who take the risk or not having any coverage. As you can imagine, you do not want to be one of the students who is living without health insurance. This could cost you a lot of money if you were to get sick. And as you probably know, catching a bug is quite common when attending college.

If you are not able to stay on your parent's health insurance policy, you need to look into buying your own. This is not to say that you need to spend a lot of money, but you need something. The policy you buy will probably not be as extensive as your parent's, but even if you only have a little bit of coverage, you will be much better off.

College students should consider these three details when shopping for a health insurance plan:

  1. Price, price, price. For a college student, saving money is a way of life. If you need to buy your own health insurance, you should do so with price in mind. The best way to secure a reasonable price is to compare the hundreds of plans that are available. Not only are there many health insurance companies that offer coverage, but each one has several policies to choose from. When you consider each one, it will become clear how much money you will need to spend each month.
  2. Although price is important, make sure that you get a good policy as far as coverage is concerned. After all, you want to be able to use your insurance should something happen. When it comes down to it, you may opt for a high deductible plan, but even these offer good benefits.
  3. Do you need health insurance for the short or long term? If you are early in your college career, you will want to look into a policy that you can keep for several years. But if you are a few months away from graduating and getting a job, you can instead opt for short term coverage. The nice thing about this is that short term health insurance policies are much less expensive.

College students in need of health insurance should consider these details. They will help you to find a policy with a reasonable price, and solid coverage that will last as long as necessary.
