How to Start the Process to Get Home Insurance
Are you a new homeowner who doesn't know where to begin to get home insurance or what it will provide? With all of the information on the Internet it can be very confusing to decide what to do first. But the first step is to focus on the fact of being a homeowner: you now have an investment to protect and that is the basic purpose of a home insurance policy.
When you get home insurance, you make an agreement with the insurance company for protection services in exchange for a certain fee for a specific period of time. Your home is exposed to many different elements that can cause damage which will affect your ability to live in your house such as:
- Wind, rain and thunderstorms
- Fire and smoke
In addition, your home can be damaged as a result of an act by a person or persons:
Any of these events can cause you to lose personal property and the use of your house, when you get home insurance and any event that is covered by your insurance occurs, the insurance company will reimburse or pay you for the damages. The other type of protection that you need that is included when you get home insurance is to safeguard you financially from a lawsuit if a person is injured on your property.
There are other types of insurance for different purposes, such as flood insurance which is becoming a standard additional policy that homeowners purchase to protect themselves from flood damage because this is not covered an a standard home insurance policy.
Now that you know the basics of home insurance, the next thing to decide is the dollar amount of your home insurance policy, which is the amount the insurance company will pay you if your home is completely destroyed by any event that is stated in your policy. The first number you need is the cost of replacing your home and the second number is the total value of everything in your house; furniture, clothing, appliances etc.
The first number depends on the building cost per square foot for where your home is located multiplied by the total number of square of your home. The second number should be based on today's cost of all of your possessions in other words, how much would it cost to replace an item you bought 5 years ago? These two numbers are basis to begin comparison shopping to get home insurance. |
